Miami Hurricanes Likely Lose First Recruit, Keith Brown, Because of Impending NCAA Sanctions
The attention has shifted somewhat back to the Miami Hurricanes losses on the field, but NCAA sanctions are still looming for the school's massive off-field failure to keep its players away from douche king sports booster Nevin Shapiro. It took a surprisingly long time, but it seems that one of the team's star 2012 recruits is about ready to jump shift in part because of the threat of sanctions.
The commit in question is Miami Norland High School linebacker Keith Brown. He was one of the early stars of Al Golden's first real recruiting class, but has decided to leave after a visit to Clemson this weekend. Clemson's surprise win over Florida State and Miami's sloppy loss to Kansas State this weekend surely didn't help things, but the threat of NCAA sanctions seemed to be the sticking point.
"Clemson is at the top of my list and decommitting from Miami is in the near future," Brown told InsideTheU according to MrSEC.com. "When? I don't know, maybe this week or sometime next week, but I'm going to do it. I talked to the coaches at Miami today so I think they know what's going on. They still want me to stay so we'll see how things turn out."
SeventhFloorBlog reports that the uncertainty of sanctions will have a lot to do with his decision:
Because Brown wants to know what NCAA sanctions UM faces before he graduates in December. He doesn't want to wind up on campus in January and find out about any punishment afterward. What would it take from the NCAA to keep him on board with Miami? "Probably no bowl games and no TV time and taking scholarships away," Brown said. "One year is no problem. Probably two or three (would cause him to go elsewhere)."

Of course, high schools kids are bound to change their minds, and kids de-commit all the time even from programs not facing sanctions. But the move underscores the fact that Golden and his Canes are going to have to start providing some big wins in order to keep their recruiting house in order.
