The Miami Marlins can't seem to win much of anything lately. Not even an omelet-eating contest.
While the team was in San Diego last week, reliever A.J. Ramos walked into the Broken Yoke Café and decided to try the restaurant's "Iron Man Challenge." Contestants are tasked with eating a meal featuring a giant omelet and all the trimmings in one hour. Winners get the meal for free and their picture on the wall.
Here's the description from the restaurant's website:
A dozen-egg omelet filled with mushrooms, onions and American cheese smothered with our own house-made chili and more cheese. Served on a 15-inch pizza pan with a generous pile of home fries and two biscuits. No substitutions please.
Ramos apparently thought he could down that easily.
"I saw a girl on [the wall], so I was like, 'Yeah, I'm doing it,'" Ramos told the Sun-Sentinel. "She wasn't big or anything. She was pretty good looking, too. I'd hate to take her on a date. She might eat more than me."
But his feeling of "anything random girl on the wall can do, I can do better," didn't quite work out.
The staff brought out the giant meal, but Ramos quickly realized he wasn't up to the task.
"When they brought it out it was on a damn pizza pan," Ramos said. "I ate all the eggs. Usually I'll eat six or seven eggs normally when I'm working out or training, but 12 eggs was pretty beastly, especially when I got to the potatoes and they started making me full. My stomach was hurting the rest of the day."
Though his attempt may have garnered more interest than an actual Marlins game.
"I was eating and 20 minutes into it people started coming over to see what I was doing. It was kind of embarrassing."
It must be strange for Ramos to have people actually watch what he's doing.
Sadly, he wasn't able to complete the challenge and had to fly the white flag.
So for those of you keeping score, during their trip to San Diego the Marlins went 0-3 against the Padres and 0-1 against omelets.
