Marco Rubio Hates Disco Music, Says Civil Rights Movement Was Part of "A Scary Time"
Marco Rubio has some interesting taste in music. He loves Nicki Minaj, but apparently hates disco. He attacked the dance genre at a Lincoln Day Dinner in Pinellas, Florida, over the weekend and hurled an insult to the Bee Gees in a bizarre, fear-mongering speech filled with spooky stories, bad jokes, and a bit of weird phrasing about the civil rights movement.
Rubio was running down all the things Americans have ever had to fear decade by decade, because that's what we really want out of politicians isn't it? Someone who reminds us what we should be afraid of.
According to Rubio, the civil rights movement was one of the scary threats that "challenged us" in the '60s. We're pretty sure he didn't mean it to come off that way, but, yeah, listing "civil rights" in a speech of "scary" things is a bit troubling.
Then came the '70s.
"The 70's were a very frighting time ...most troubling of all we had to overcome disco, and bell bottoms, and the Bee Gees," Rubio said.
Apparently attacking the Bee Gees was a line too far for someone in the audience who bellowed, "Woah, don't go there."
"All right, I went to far. I apologize," said Rubio.
Obviously, attacking straight white rich men at a Republican function crosses the line.
Jumping on the hate of disco music, a backlash historically informed by racism and homophobia, that's OK, though. Just don't attack the white guys who made a hell of a lot of money off it.
In closing, we leave you with the gayest, blackest disco song of all time: Sylvester's "You Make me Feel." If you don't dance, well, you probably voted for Rubio.
