Manny Ramirez a Marlin? -- UPDATED
UPDATE: Sorry, Fish fans dreaming of a summer watching Manny being Manny in Dolphin Stadium. Looks like the ManRam will be looking for the best place to take a leak behind the outfield wall in sunny Chavez Ravine instead.
According to ESPN, the eccentric slugger is headed to the Dodgers in a three-way trade with the Pirates.
The Florida Marlins, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates have all reached a tentative blockbuster deal that would bring talented and slightly off-his-rocker slugger Manny Ramirez to the Marlins. The Sox and Fish had been in serious talks about Manny since Wednesday afternoon. Ramirez, it seems, has worn out his welcome in Boston and had been hinting at a desire to be traded. Reports say that the Marlins will send Jeremy Hermida and possibly a prospect to Pittsburgh. The Pirates would then swing a couple of players to Boston, which in turn, would then send Manny to Miami.

The Palm Beach Post is reporting that the deal is all but done. However, ESPN’s Peter Gammons is saying the talks could last all the way to the trade deadline at 4 p.m. today.
Practically speaking, the trade would give the Marlins a star player (Manny’s contract is worth $20 million, the entire Marlins roster is worth $22 million) with one of the sweetest swings in the history of baseball. Manny would bring more muscle to an already potent offense. But, Ramirez is a defensive liability, as is the rest of the Marlins defense. So the real needs – defense and pitching – aren’t being filled here. Sorry, but thems the facts. Still, that being said, this team is in the thick of the NL East race, and having the Manny Ramirez in the lineup will no doubt have the Mets and Phillies shitting their polyester pants.
It would be a shame if the Marlins give up prospect Mike Stanton, as some reports suggest, to essentially rent out Manny’s services for two months. But the Marlins have always been a team willing to sacrifice some of its future for the chance to win it all now. President of Baseball Ops Larry Beinfest is pretty much a genius when it comes to building baseball teams, so we’ll just defer to him. And the last time the Fish swing a deal with the Red Sox, the Marlins ended up with Hanley Ramirez. Not too shabby. A lineup of Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, and Manny? Sounds sweet indeed.
