Man Biking to Miami to Propose to Girlfriend Stabbed To Death in Vero Beach
Kevin Adorno wanted to combine his bucket list with his engagement. The 28-year-old graphic designer from Uniondale, Connecticut, always wanted to bike down the East Coast from Maryland to Miami, and he decided that once he arrived here he'd propose to his girlfriend.
Unfortunately, Adorno met a sad end when he was stabbed by a homeless man outside of a Vero Beach McDonald's.
According to TC Palm, Adorno had stopped at a McDonald's on Monday and was talking to his girlfriend on his cellphone. He was then confronted 59-year-old Rene Herrera Cruz.
His girlfriend told police that she heard Adorno drop his cell phone but didn't hear any of the ensuing incident. The next thing she heard on the phone call was sirens.
Cruz apparently stabbed Adorno in the chest and arm. Adorno was taken to Indian River Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Cruz fled across the street from a McDonald's to a Burger King where he was found by police. The knife was tossed into a nearby bush.
TC Palm reports that Cruz's explanation for the killing was bizarre:
Detectives said Cruz admitted during questioning to committing the stabbing. Cruz told police he thought Adorno was directing other people by cellphone to attack him. He also told detectives someone inside McDonald's was using a laptop computer to order someone to attack him.
In fact, Cruz had contact with police earlier this weekend. He had called 911 that Friday to report that he felt someone might attack him.
Cruz is a native of Cuba and lived around Miami for several years before relocating to the streets of Vero Beach.
Sounds like Florida is doing just a bang-up job of helping mentally ill people who are a possible danger to themselves and others, doesn't it?
