A suspected car thief and a Hialeah police officer are both in the hospital this afternoon after a chain of events involving a hit-and-run accident and a police-involved shooting.

The officer, who has not yet been identified, attempted to stop what was believed to have been a stolen car near the intersection of Okeechobee Road and Lejeune Road earlier this morning. During the stop, the man sped off and hit the officer.

According to NBCMiami, other officers responded by opening gunfire on the car. One of the bullets hit the driver.

Police eventually caught up with the driver near Southeast 8th Street and 8th Court and were able to arrest him.

A woman was in the passenger's seat. She was not wounded, but was detained.

Both the officer and suspect have been taken to nearby hospitals. Police haven't released an update on their condition.
