Here's a List of 3,125 County Employees Who Made Six Figures This Year
Has Carlos Gimenez changed Carlos Alvarez's big-spendin' ways?
Let's take a moment to remember back to the distant past. Cue the theremins. The time: Last November. The place: Miami-Dade. The conflict: County residents enraged over the economic free fall are close to recalling Mayor Carlos Alvarez over a host of missteps. That's when Riptide and Random Pixels published a list of 3,300 county employees who'd topped six figures in salary that year -- a list that sparked dozens of comments and stoked the outrage flames.
Fast forward 12 months. Alvarez is gone, Carlos Gimenez took his place in County Hall on pledges of greater fiscal responsibility and Bill Cooke at Random Pixels has again snagged a list of $100,000 earners. The verdict? Gimenez has made a dent, but there are still 3,125 county workers making some serious bank.
Check out the full embedded list below. As Cooke points out on his blog, some of Gimenez's staff have joined that County firmly ensconced as Dade one-percenters, including:
- Russell Benford, the deputy mayor, who gets $230,000 plus $10,000 in "executive benefits" and almost $5,000 in car allowances
- Ed Marquez, another deputy mayor, whose salary is $267,000 with similar benefits
- Jack Osterholt, a third deputy mayor, with $250,000 on the books plus benefits
- Gimenez himself, who reduced his salary but still pulls in $150,000 a year
Cooke also singles out Alejandro Munoz, who took the reigns of the Animal Services Department from the controversial ex-director Sarah Pizano. Munoz makes more than $183,000 in adjusted salary -- significantly more than the head of the statewide Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Riptide called a county spokeswoman for comment on this year's list, but she wasn't immediately available this morning. We'll update the post when we hear back.
