Fifty-Three Percent of Floridians Think Rick Scott's Budget Will Hurt Them, 48 Percent Think He's Doing a Bad Job
Florida residents are getting a big gulp of Tea Party policy thanks to Gov. Rick Scott, and so far they don't seem to be enjoying the bitter taste. According to a new Quinnipiac poll, 48 percent of Floridians disapprove of Scott's job performance, up from 22 percent in February. Fifty-three percent think his proposed budget is unfair to people like them, 47 percent think his budget cuts go too far, and 40 percent think his cuts will hurt Florida's economy.
There's very little good news for Scott in the numbers from the respected pollster. His 35/48 approval/disapproval split is actually worse than the Republican-controlled legislature's 35/47. In South Florida, only 32 percent of voters think he's doing a good job, while 54 percent disapprove.
Fifty-five percent of Floridians disapprove of the way the governor is handling the budget, while 53 percent say the budget is unfair to "people like them." Forty-seven percent think the cuts in the budget go too far, compared to only 29 percent who think they're just right and 16 percent who want more cuts. Forty-nine percent think $2 billion in tax cuts for business and property owners is a bad idea.
Forty percent think Scott's budget will actually hurt Florida, compared to only 33 percent who think it will help.
But some of Scott's individual proposals are popular. Fifty-nine percent approve of his plan to make state employees pay into their own retirement fund. Seventy-eight percent approve of his plan to drug-test state employees. However, 57 percent disapprove of the plan to tie teachers' pay to student performance.
