Dolphins Tight End Dustin Keller Suffers Gruesome Knee Injury, Out For Season
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport has confirmed today that Miami Dolphins tight end Dustin Keller tore his ACL, PCL, and MCL and also dislocated his kneecap in Miami's 24-17 loss to the Houston Texans Saturday night, ending his season and putting the 29-year-old's career in jeopardy.
Keller emailed Rapoport to thank everyone for their support and well wishes.
"I just want everyone to know that as disappointing as this is, I don't want anybody feeling sorry for me," Keller wrote. "It's going to be a hard road back, but I promise I'm going to come back stronger, faster, and be a better player than before.
He adds, "I'm very confident that my team is going to have a great season, and even though I won't be on the field this year, I am behind my guys 100 percent! More than anything, I'd like to thank all my family, friends, and teammates for their prayers and support. I'm glad to have the support system in my life that I do."
The injury is an especially crushing blow for Keller, who was banking on his improved health when he agreed to a one-year deal with the Fins this off-season. Keller was coming off an injury-riddled 2012 that included a pulled groin and high ankle sprain that hindered Keller's production, limiting him to only 28 receptions, 317 yards, and two touchdowns in just eight games for the New York Jets.
The Miami Dolphins are left with a huge question mark at tight end now, with just Charles Clay, Michael Egnew, and rookie Dion Sims on the current roster behind Keller on the depth chart. It's likely the team is keeping its eye on other teams' cuts while in the meantime assessing if any of the young players mentioned can step up and help fill the role the team had in mind for Keller.
The Miami Dolphins get their first chance to figure it out Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their first home game of the preseason.
