David Beckham Considering Old Miami Herald Site for Stadium

David Beckham continues having possible soccer stadium sites waved in front of him only to see them snatched away. The latest idea: building a stadium on the old site of the Miami Herald building, though that plan certainly seems like a stretch.

Major League Soccer and Beckham are adamant about building a soccer stadium for the city's planned new team somewhere in Miami's urban core, preferably on the water.

The old Miami Herald site fits that criteria, but as you might remember, it was bought by Malaysian conglomerate Genting for around $236 million in 2011. The company had planned to build a destination resort and casino on the property but was unable to get the Florida Legislature to legalize gambling in the state.

Local 10 reports that Beckham has met with Genting execs at least twice in New York City. Everyone's favorite city commissioner, Marc Sarnoff, is glad to tell the news station that the whole thing was his idea and that he linked Beckham and Genting up in the first place.

"I've invited Beckham to have a discussion with them because if you wanted to create a downtown stadium, that is a place where you can accomplish that," Sarnoff said.

The Herald site itself is only about five acres, but Genting has amassed about a total of 30 acres in the area. The plan for Beckham's stadium in Museum Park would have required 4.2 acres.

Update: Beckham's group has released the following statement:

Early on in the process of looking at sites, the Beckham team looked at the former Miami Herald property -- which is a terrific location -- and spoke with Genting representatives. There's been no further discussions and none of late.

Miami is our preferred choice, and the Beckham team is working hard to give the people of the city what they want and deserve: a world-class soccer team.
