Al Golden Named Head Coach of Miami Hurricanes
The last time Al Golden coached a college football game he lost to Miami of Ohio. The next time he coaches a team it may very well be Miami of Florida. ESPN reports that Golden, the current head coach at Temple, has been offered the vacant position as the Hurricanes' head coach and is likely to accept. Though the deal has not been completely finalized. Update: It's official.
Golden lead the Owls to an 8-4 season this year, and his Mid-American conference team did beat Big East champs UConn, though were not invited to a Bowl game. That record is only one game better than the 'Canes achieved under fired Randy Shannon in the tougher ACC. Though, unlike Shannon, he's vastly improved his team. They went 0-11 in the year before Golden was named head coach, and 1-11 in his first year. 8-4 is also the record Jimmy Johnson had in his final year at Oklahoma State, a program he rebuilt, before coming to the U.
Also of much importance, probably especially to UM President Donna Shalala, is the academic success Golden has achieved with the Owls.
Golden has been in contention for a head coaching job at various schools in automatic qualifying conferences in the past including Cincinnati, UCLA and Tennessee. He's previously been an assistant coach at Boston College, Penn and Virginia.
We'll have to see how much though Golden will be able to improve the 'Canes, and how he'll do in the vicious recruiting grounds of Florida.
Let's be honest though. There's only so much a talented coach can do at a program like Temple. At Miami there's pretty much no limit.
One problem Golden won't have: getting used to coaching in a lightly attended Pro stadium. The Owls play in the home stadium of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The CFL's most successful coach Marc Trestman, UConn coach Randy Edsall, and surprisingly Houston coach Kevin Sumlin were, according to ESPN, also considered.
