Ultra Music Festival '09: Cut Copy
Saturday, March 28, 2009
Bicentennial Park, Miami
Better than: Listening to them on your iPod.
Most of my encounters with Cut Copy have been while drunk at The Vagabond or White Room, where indie dance-rock is pretty much the norm. However it wasn't until Boys Noize gave "Lights & Music" his own personal electro-house touch that I started to really give them any attention.
Considering these guys have been at it since 2001, even having performed in Miami back in for WMC 2006, they aren't exactly new to electro-pop scene. However, 2008's In Ghost Colours has definitely been the band's defining moment giving them not only critical acclaim, but plenty of presence on the dancefloor.
At Saturday's performance at Ultra, the Aussie quartet gave the audience plenty of synthetic beats and melodies to dance to. Yes, this wasn't you hard hitting electro banger, but who the hell cared? Not me. Plus, my ears appreciated the break.
Tracks like the aforementioned "Lights & Music," "Out There On the Ice," "Hearts on Fire," "Far Away," "Feel the Love," and "Saturdays" off of 2004's Bright Like Neon Love, simply seemed to only sound better when played live. In fact, at some point during their performance I Twittered "Cut Copy is one of those rare bands that sound just as good live as they do on their album," and I'm standing by that statement.
During "Feel the Love," bass player Tim Hooey was handed an acoustic guitar saying "This is probably the only time you'll see one of these at this festival." They definitely had plenty of energy and high spirits considering this was the last stop of their 14-month long tour. Lead singer Dan Whitford even claimed he couldn't think of a better place to end the long tour than Miami.
Personal Bias: For the most part, the Bayfront Stage was perhaps the best stage at Ultra in my opinion.
Random Detail: To the stagehand who found it fun to throw water directly at my face, I hope karma gets you.
By the Way: The guys celebrated the end of their tour with a DJ set at Rokbar at night.
