Nobody in Miami has been a bigger booster of local quartet The Jean Marie than Lolo Reskin of Sweat Records. So where else would the band celebrate its latest album release than at The Vagabond's Friday party, which Lolo helps throw? So this edition celebrates Annie Jump Cannon, the group's first full-length release, following a pair of EPs. The 11 tracks demonstrate a further honing of The Jean Marie's sound, a party-ready brand of power-pop with just enough synth and emotive singing to hint at New Wave, without falling into a retro-throwback rut. No stranger to the occasional arty ballad, the band is nevertheless at its best at full throttle, with twisted, soul-infused post-punk verses somehow leading into arena-size choruses.
