Technasia on Why Miami Is His Favorite City in America

For live artists, praising the city they have found themselves playing in is an all but essential practice. Whether it be New York City or some Podunk town in nowhere, USA, the codification of concert etiquette has all but strong-armed artists into proclaiming “I love/thank you/ ‘insert municipality of choice here’!” regardless of whether they feel all that strongly about the anonymous club or venue they’ll be occupying for a select number of hours. Speaking to Charles Siegling — better-known under his DJ moniker of Technasia – on his forthcoming performances at Heart and Ultra, the techno veteran leaves little room to doubt that he truly and utterly adores Miami.

“It’s a secret to no one that I really love Miami,” Siegling says. “It is by far my favorite city in the U.S. and one of my top three in the world… Its multicultural Latin feel, its diverse population, its capability of accepting the differing reasons why people come to live in this town… It feels like a Berlin with sun, groovy music, and palm trees.”

Going so far as to say that Miami possesses “the kind of nonchalance and gleefulness which lacks in many European electronic music hubs, such as London, Berlin or Barcelona,” the Paris-born artist views his extensive history and varied experiences in the city as an achievement, or more specifically, a testament to the hard work and relentless touring that has characterized his decades-long career as a techno-house producer, DJ, and label head.

“I see Miami like a goal that took me many years to reach,” Siegling continues. “Miami would have not suited me 15 or 20 years ago at the start of my career, but as I have grown more mature and confident with what I do today, I feel I am able to get a good synergy in this town.”

Evidently, Miami audiences and venues are feeling this synergy as well: Despite having just performed at Heart last Friday, in addition to a set at Ultra’s Resistance stage, this week will see Technasia return to Heart. Even with a smaller-than-you’d-think discography, due in no small part to his self-admitted status as a perfectionist, Siegling’s work as Technasia has earned him a devoted following worldwide. For what Siegling may lack in annual and consistent releases he more than makes up for with a tremendous reputation as a live DJ and showman.

Asked how he distinguishes his approach to large, outdoor festivals like Ultra and more intimate settings like Heart, Siegling says he treats every show like its own unique challenge.

“I try to understand the kind of crowd I’m facing and establish a bond with them,” Siegling says. “It does feel quite different to play in front of thousands of people or in a small club for 200, in that it is a little easier to set the crowd on fire in those huge venues. But in the end, the way I approach it is pretty much always the same. I need to create that connection with the audience to bring them to the climax. You cannot always succeed at it, but it is essential for me to try to achieve it.”

Those looking to acquaint themselves with Techansia before attending any one of this week’s shows can do far worse than starting with last year’s collaborative single with Green Velvet, “Suga,” a house anthem that’s as summery, sunny, and "Miami" as it gets. Although we can’t promise Technasia’s shows will be “sunny,” we can guarantee it'll be quintessentially “Miami.”
