We sat down with Paul Rose, AKA Scuba, last Sunday night following his set at Beta Nightclub in Denver, where he dropped four hours of techno tracks for the glossy-eyed club goers that gathered on the dance floor.
While the Colorado crowd was either taking it easy or super blazed, Rose is expecting increased energy when he takes the controls tomorrow night in Downtown Miami. The Max Mayfield techno cone starts in Wynwood and moves to 11th Street later in the evening as Rose and top Detroit techno DJ/producer, Carl Craig, headline the Official III Points after-party on the Terrace at Club Space.

Rose is a big fan of Miami, but not the Winter Music Conference version. “Miami’s a cool town," he says. "I’ve always enjoyed it and I’m really looking forward to playing the Terrace. I’ve played at Space before, but not the Terrace so this is important. I must admit, though, I fell out of love with [Winter Music] Conference a few years ago. Everyone’s lumped in together and everyone’s talking shop. I prefer Miami when it’s just locals in town — it’s the proper thing. Not to say Conference doesn’t have its place — it’s just not for me.”

His four albums: A Mutual Antipathy (2008), Triangulation (2010), Personality (2012), and Claustrophobia (2015) were all released on his label Hotflush, which he founded in 2003. His productions fittingly sound like dark rainy nights in London or cold industrial spaces in Berlin. He’s retired the London dubstep sounds from his Triangulation album, though. “I had to stop playing dubstep because it was perceived as something else," he says. "It was dubstep at the time, but I haven’t played that stuff for six years.”
For those that haven’t made it to Berlin or were vetoed by a red velvet rope at Berghain — opportunity is knocking Saturday night at Club Space.
