SAFE Miami's Fifth Anniversary Parties: Maya Jane Coles, Claude VonStroke, James Holden
SAFE Miami is turning five years old this month.
Now that may mean something to you if you're a regular Crossfade reader, because we've been following the electronic dance music tastemakers and promotions veterans since the beginning.
And it'll definitely mean something to you if you're a regular on the local underground scene, which has grown tremendously in recent years, thanks in no small part to the musical ethos of SAFE's parties.
"[Our] original concept was to create private intimate underground music experiences ... with a fine full-range sound system," SAFE's Diego Martinelli tells Crossfade. "[These] would feature mostly unknown artists who were friends of ours. Our main focus was the quality of the experiences, from the smallest to the most obvious of details."
"Originally, we envisioned people would be invited by association, that sort of thing. At the time, we felt it was risky and somewhat impractical to execute. The first SAFE event happened in 2007. In the few years leading up to it, we kept developing the idea as we witnessed Miami's cultural curve become gradually more favorable to what we envisioned.
"SAFE is about community and celebrating underground music," Diego adds. "It aims at challenging tastes and standards. It's about improbable connections that manifest themselves through the nights. Most importantly, it's about the collective experience and the vibe.
"The vibe is everything."
SAFE Miami's Fifth Anniversary Party Schedule
Thursday, August 30 DJ Koze
Friday, August 31 Maya Jane Coles and Claude VonStroke
Saturday, September 1 Omar S
Sunday, September 2 Eats Everything and James Holden
And the vibe (not to mention the quality international bookings) is precisely what's made past SAFE parties so memorable. A few of you may fondly remember: the beloved Ghostly International label's 10-year anniversary party during Art Basel 2009, and epic WMC lineups like Flying Circus, Listed Plays it SAFE, and Last Resort.
But SAFE is also busy year-round, holding down a residency at the Electric Pickle and booking international house and techno luminaries like Danny Howells, Lee Burridge, Steve Lawler, and Cassy on the regular. The collective even launched its own weekly show on Wynwood Radio last month.
With that kind of track record and die-hard following, it's hardly surprising that SAFE is going to town with its fifth anniversary party plans -- a long weekend's worth of world-class music hosted by the Pickle.
SAFE Miami's Fifth Anniversary Weekend. Thursday, August 30, to Sunday, September 2. Electric Pickle, 2826 N. Miami Ave., Miami. Weekend passes cost $80 plus fees via safe.brownpapertickets.com. Call 305-456-5613 or visit electricpicklemiami.com.
