Shine opens its Sleepless Night festivities Friday with an appearance by steamy DJ Colette. With her doe eyes and demure presence, Chicago native Colette is the very essence of postmillennial house music. Her sweet but sultry voice has been called "angelic" so many times it's a wonder she hasn't grown wings. Imagine a less breathy Kylie Minogue tempered with a more controlled Roisin Murphy, and you have a good idea of her sound.
Where in the late Eighties the diva reigned supreme and made the music cower, Colette has kept it technically simple and ever melodic. Her style has made the choirgirl-gone-Chicago-house-siren a mainstay of modern dance music.
It's been a tough road to hoe, of course. As raves were beginning to wind down in the late Nineties, Colette was busting through the "novelty act" stereotype that kept many female DJs corralled. But since the launch of her SuperJane troupe with fellow Windy City DJs Dayhota, Lady D., and Heather, Colette has paved the way for other women to get as much time behind the decks as their male counterparts.
In 2006 Colette reunited with Heather for a stateside tour promoting their House of Om mix. It was a busy year — Colette also played an intense set at Coachella, kept up her long-running residency at Chicago's Smartbar, and toured with Kaskade.

This year she shows no signs of slowing, with the release of her new album, Push. "I'm really excited about this record," she gushes. "I collaborated with such amazing producers and songwriters on this project, and I've done a few shows with a live band for the first time." The latter was a little obvious in some of her more recent shows, such as the DNA gig in San Francisco, where she appeared at times a little bewildered. It's apparent she's still getting used to being front and center as a vocalist rather than hidden behind the decks. But with the help of a confident backing band and floor-filling material like her current single, "If," she's becoming more animated by the day.
Shine is located in the Shelborne, the official hotel for Miami Beach's Sleepless Weekend festivities. "I'm thrilled to be a part of this innovative event," says Colette. "It's exciting to think of all the fantastic art and music that is going to be shared this night." Also performing Friday is JoJo Flores, known for his garage, deep house, and Afro-Latin rhythms. On Saturday night, none other than DJ Dan closes out the festivities. Get amped.
