Peanut Butter Wolf's "Not Going to Stop Releasing Hip-Hop," Playing Bardot on March 29

Legend has it that a dollop of peanut butter will turn a wolf into a monster. Similarly, a nominally priced monthly fee will turn you into a monster music collector, like Peanut Butter Wolf and his new digital music subscription.

The San Jose, California native, who broke onto the hip-hop scene as Charizma's DJ in the early '90s, recently introduced a monthly music subscription service via his Stones Throw Records label. For $10 a month, the indie imprint digitally delivers new releases to subscribers' inboxes free of anti-sharing DRM restrictions.

For $15, however, you can catch Peanut Butter Wolf live at Bardot on Thursday, March 29, when the record producer and label founder spins culturally relevant tunes during the Midtown lounge's Living Room Sessions.

Peanut Butter Wolf, whose real name is Chris Manak, was in Austin earlier this month for South by Southwest and opened up to The Austin Chronicle about his label's recent hardships.

"We haven't had a lot of success with rap recently. I stand by what we've put out, but the sales haven't been the same."

Despite lackluster sales, however, Manak promises to stay true to his passion.

"I'm not going to stop releasing hip-hop because we don't have the same fan base," he says. "I started this label because I wanted to release records I liked."

Peanut Butter Wolf. Thursday, March 29. Bardot, 3456 North Miami Ave., Miami. The show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets cost $15 to $20 plus fees via eventbrite.com. Call 305-576-5570 or visit bardotmiai.com.
