Miami's m.O.N.R.O.E Talks New EP on Get Physical and Release Party at Treehouse

If you hadn't heard of m.O.N.R.O.E., AKA Jordan Postrel, yet, it was only a matter of time, because this local Miami DJ-producer is blowing up in a big way this year.
Auspicious collaborations with DV8 label boss Daniel Dubb put Postrel on the international tech-house radar in 2014. And most recently, homeboy has dropped a new EP on Get Physical, one of the top labels on the global scene.
With an energetic groove-heavy sound shot through with exuberant classic house flavors, the new Moonset EP certainly puts m.O.N.R.O.E. among Miami's most promising new electronic dance music ambassadors to the world.
Ahead of the record release party at Treehouse Miami on Saturday, we here at New Times caught up with Postrel to find out more about this talented local.

New Times: Are you a Miami native? What is your history here?
Jordan Postrel: I was born in Miami but I grew up between Miami and France. I went to high school at Miami Country Day. I was home-schooled my last year because I signed to Elite and went to work as a model in Milan and Paris. I was always DJing and producing music on the side, until it started to pick up.
What kind of music did you grow up listening to? How did you first get drawn to electronic dance music?
I was always into everything — there was only good music and bad music. I got hooked on electronic dance music when I was 15 and went to Ultra Music Festival and saw Carl Cox. As a kid, I was a huge Daft Punk fan and was also into '90s hip-hop and alternative rock. I listened to the Strokes, Mr. Oizo, Room 5, Basement Jaxx, Solid Groove, SebastiAn, Justice, Biggie, Wu-Tang, Nas, Big L, and so many others.
So how did you first get into music production? And what have been some of the biggest challenges and lessons for you during your development as a producer?
I first started DJing when I was 18, got into production at 19, and made it my life. The biggest lesson I've learned is that if you want anything done right, do it yourself and learn how to push yourself as an artist. There are lots of challenges I've overcome — mostly getting screwed over by other people in the early stages of my music career. But if you have good intentions and work hard, it feels really good to come out on top.
Getting signed with Get Physical is no small feat. How did you hook up with this prestigious label?
I'm very happy to be working with them. My friend Greg Pidcock, who's on Hot Creations, told me some of my tracks would fit with Get Physical. He knew the A&R guy, so he linked me with him, and a few weeks later they asked to sign these tracks.
What can you tell us about the Moonset EP? What was the creative process like on this record?
Creatively, it was a lot of experimentation and playing around with instrument racks in Ableton. I was going for a deep, dubby techno vibe with a bit of house, and this is how it came out.
So what's next for M.O.N.R.O.E.? Do you have any new projects or releases on the horizon yet?
There's loads of music to be released. I have a single coming out later this summer on Saved Records, Nic Fanciulli's label. I have another Get Physical EP in the works and some remixes I'm putting out for free.
What can we expect during the record release party at Treehouse on Saturday?
When I DJ, I try to keep the idea of old-school house music intact, meaning you are not going to hear a lot of these records unless you come to see me play, because no one else has them. Why? Because I made them, or my friends who I work with made them. That's the whole point of going to see a DJ, right? To hear good music you've never heard before.
