Egads! The Misfits and Gwar on a double bill. Sounds too grim to be true. But it is. At the Chili Pepper (200 W. Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale) on Sunday, the gruesome twosome will fill the club with dark music and morbid theatrics. These Misfits are different from the group Glen Danzig led into cultdom in 1977, but the new outfit, together since 1996, still features original member Jerry Only and his brother Doyle, who are on tour plugging a new disc, Famous Monsters. Gwar still lives up to its "God What an Awful Racket" moniker, and surely won't disappoint the scores of fans who have seen the band members squirting goo into the audience since 1988. With luck the makeup and muck from the concert will be cleared in time for another underground legend, Fugazi, which plays on Monday. Led by former Minor Threat main man Ian Mackaye, Fugazi holds tight to its strident anticorporate stance. Since forming in 1988, the hardcore outfit has shunned the popular media, ignored major labels, and charged less than ten bucks a show. The warm-up band is Faraquet. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., and tickets cost $6. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the Misfits and Gwar show, and tickets cost $19. Call 954-525-5336.
Worlds away from horrid antics, skinheads, and melancholy tunes is the jazz simmering at the Van Dyke Café (846 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach). Show up on Friday and Saturday for the Vocal Spectacular with a few of the area's top singers: Raul Midon, Wendy Pedersen, and Rita Quintero will exercise their chords with the Mike Levine Trio. Then from Monday to Wednesday the café welcomes back tenor sax man extraordinaire Harry Allen, who will jam with pianist Eddie Higgins and bassist Don Wilner. The shows start at 9:30 p.m. Call 5343600 for more information.
