It was hard to ride the No Wave, especially when the New Wave was so poppy and colorful. Thus, late-Seventies and early-Eighties bands who performed noisy punk versions of funk and disco got caught in the riptide. No matter: While the electroclash rehash becomes a faded memory, it looks like the No Wave revival is here to stay. Spindly postpunk rockers like Erase Errata and Liars, and dub-disco guitar gods like Out Hud and !!! all offer new ways for indie bands to boogie while puzzling club kids with their stringed noisemakers.
It's true that they owe a debt to forebears such as Gang of Four, Liquid Liquid, et al., but we owe them for resurrecting those sounds. Look for the leaders of the revival -- and cornerstones of the pace-setting DFA label -- the Rapture and LCD Soundsystem to steal the show at the Ultra Music Festival.
