The beat is back.
For the 12th straight year, the Heineken TransAtlantic Festival will be unleashing a multilingual flourish of edgy international tuneage on our city's most adventurous music fans.
In its last few editions alone, this Miami New Times' Best Festival winner (sponsored by everyone's fave Dutch brew and organized by Miami's premier world-music presenter, Rhythm Foundation) has brought Afrobeat heir Seun Kuti, cumbia experimentalist Quantic, electro-tango collective Bajofondo, Brazilian bass-funk diva Zuzuka Poderosa, and Colombian pop-rap crew Bomba Estéreo to the North Beach Bandshell.
And with its 2014 lineup, the fest has assembled another awesome batch of globe-spanning acts, hailing from Chile, Niger, Colombia, and Jamaica -- not to mention that distant land known as the 305.
Over three days during the first week of April, the TransAtlantic fest will host its official 2014 launch party at Blackbird Ordinary, as well as two full concerts at the bandshell.
For the kickoff, Rhythm Foundation has tapped a pair of locals: Peru-via-Miami indietronic duo Hunters of the Alps and Best of Miami-winning rock trio Eagle Chief, formerly known as Arboles Libres.
Meanwhile, headlining the festival's North Beach Bandshell shows, there will be Chilean indie outfit Astro, Colombian art-pop viral video star Esteman, and Tuareg guitar master Omara "Bombino" Moctar from Niger, as well Jamaica's self-described "rootstronic" reggae crew, Courtney John Project, alongside 305 openers Tremends and Afrobeta.
In the words of a guy at last year's TransAtlantic fest: "Tiki-ta-ba-rump-ba-ba-boom! Follow that beat!"
