The Droog DJs are some of the fiercest soldiers for the cause of quality dance music in their hometown of Los Angeles. Buddies Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin, and Justin Sloe are proponents of more stripped-down sounds, spinning dubby, clicky, groove-oriented tracks on the techno/house spectrum. Perhaps it's a reaction to their bling-bling Hell-A surroundings. And the vibe is catching on. Droog's profile has risen exponentially through the trio's residency at Avalon in Hollywood.
"Something genuinely cool and different is happening in the house and techno scene in Los Angeles," Sloe says. "An indigenous scene or movement has sprung up here. A combination of locals and new transplants from around the world have been attracted by the new, smaller-scale but more impassioned music-driven nightlife that has taken in a multitude of open-air day parties, a healthy warehouse scene, and the Hollywood revival."
Now the three have taken the next step — founding their own label, in the hopes of pushing this scene's innovations to the rest of the dance music world. All of the music will be produced in L.A., either by L.A.-based artists or visiting international guests. A pair of EPs, due out within the next few months, will showcase the label's MO. The first will feature tracks by Droog, as well as by peers Lee Foss, Jamie Jones, and Lee Curtiss.
