Concert Review: Stevie B at Nectar Lounge

The Review: It's a sad thing when your life peeks at 13.
Ever wonder what those kids that used to rule the roller skating rink grew up to look like?
Well, kind of the same - ghetto-fabulous in tight clothes and big earrings - but fatter.
Waiting for Stevie B to perform at the Nectar Lounge Thursday night, a few people dusted off their old dance moves. We saw the rabbit. We saw the kid-and-play. All we needed was a good dance battle followed by a couples skate, and it would have felt like 1988 again.
It was all so sweet, until a pair of 60+year-old hags started bumpin' and grindin' with the younguns. Ewww. Granny stop!
Late-80s nostalgia was flowing from the DJ-booth. We heard Jody Watley singing "I'm looking for a new love," and Rob Bass saying he "came to get down." [Rob Bass, by-the-way, will be at Nectar in a few weeks]
Stevie B came on around 11:30pm, looking plumper and yet more handsome than in his heyday. The mullet is gone! In the middle of "Party Your Body," he launched into some fancy footwork, and the crowd cheered. "Oh y'all don't think I can still get busy?" he asked. Then he reminded us that he's 50. Gulp.
But seriously, Stevie B still has the magic. His voice was high-pitched heaven, and he got the crowd chanting and singing along like the freestyle pro that he is. Okay, so it was mostly women singing along (although there were two sentimental dudes who knew all the words. Ah-hem, don't know what to say about that).
The finale was "Spring Love." And the girls were lovin' it. They clutched their chests and sang along, remembering their fateful middle school affairs. Oh, going to second-base was so sweet! "The way we shared, the way we cared....and I won't forget." --Amy Guthrie
