Can't Stand Ya's Bassist Nick Down Talks Churchill's Pub and Shitty Jobs
There are some people who will be active and visible on the Miami punk scene until they are old and grey. One example: Punk crew the Can't Stand Ya's is made up of Churchill's lifers.
Frontman Joe Obnoxious was co-leader for ex-Lookout Records artists the Basicks. Drummer Todd Slimak has been playing Churchill's since long before he was even old enough to drive. Bassist Nick Down maintains a charming laid back appearance in addition to being one of Miami's most beloved sidemen.
The Can't Stand Ya's version of punk rock is rooted deeply in 1977's first wave and proto-punk acts like the Sonics, the Stooges, and the MC5.
Tomorrow, the band is playing at Churchill's with Low Visibility, Rough Roosters and Liberty Call. So we met up with the Can't Stand Ya's bassist over some coffee -- if you know what we mean -- to talk to him about music libraries and shitty jobs.

New Times: What can you say about the formation of the Cant Stand Yas?
Down: Todd called me with Joey Basick on the line and said they wanted to jam a
few covers. We started playing and it was really fun. At first we only
played covers but more recently we've been focusing on new material.
But we still rock a lot of covers.
How do you see your role in the band?
I sing a little bit
here and there and provide the steady backbone rhythm. However, I guess
my biggest role in the band is to be the good looking one to attract
all the ladies.
It's a fact that you have an expansive music library. What bands are you hearing lately?
I'm always listening to something new as I pretty much listen to music
all day at work. This past week I've been jamming a lot of Los
Straitjackets. It's all instrumental and pretty good stuff to jam while I'm working.
What's the best band to listen to on the way to a shitty job?
I like to listen to the The Undertones when i got the Monday blues cuz they just seem to put me in a good mood somehow.
You guys recently added a new lead guitarist. Can you tell us about him ... Name, powers, prowess?
just added a new guitarist, Blonde Chris. He's the first lead guitar
player that actually lives in Miami that we've had as both of our first
two guitar players drove from several hours away. He has fit right in
and is an awesome addition as we've really picked up writing new
material since he joined.
What is the occasion for this Saturday's show?
I believe its a "Kabuki birthday celebration/the world's ending because Jesus is coming" show.
Are you guys working on any new material?
of new material. Like I mentioned earlier, now that chris is in the
band we can practice more which means more song writing. We should be
headed to the studio to work on a recording in next few weeks
