Remix collections based on legendary artists or record labels are often dicey propositions concocted to introduce a younger generation to a classic sound in a form that listeners are expected to somehow find more palatable. Sometimes these offerings aren't well-thought-out and go a long way toward damaging the legacy of the original recordings, making proceedings seem like one long Saturday Night Live-style parody.
That's not the case with Roots, Rock, Remixed, which features electronic dub remixers such as DJ Spooky, King Kooba, Afrodisiac Sound System, and Jimpster. It is not only respectful of Bob Marley's work, but also it's actually fun, laid-back listening — something that cannot be said about many previous attempts to rerub and/or cover the man's catalogue. Participating producers chose to create minimal backdrops for Marley anthems like "Rainbow Country," "Sun Is Shining," and "One Love" rather than make them obnoxious showcases for their own burgeoning knob twiddles.
