A Night of Drum 'n' Bass at Laundry Bar

The spazzy beats of drum 'n' bass are certainly an acquired taste, but since 1997, there's been no other vibe on the planet for Will Miles, a DJ and producer based in Chapel Hill. An old-school fan of genre pioneers like Ray Keith and Lemon D, Miles tends to lay his puréed drum machine sounds under a soundscape of jazz loops light enough to be played over supermarket speakers.

A classical performance major, Miles played double bass and cello at the University of Cincinnati's conservatory of music. In 2001, Miles's first singles, "Spork" and "Blonde Brigade," received international attention, and encouraged him try his luck as a DJ in North Carolina. Once settled in Chapel Hill, he made a splash within the drum 'n' bass community, spinning in Wilmington, Raleigh, and Durham. He's still based there these days, running his own imprint, Miles A. Head, which includes in its catalogue tracks by Kjell and NA.CL.

A couple of examples of Miles's handiwork can be found on Transit Mix Series Vol. 1, a mix put out by the Fort Lauderdale-based clothing company Transit Industries. (As sponsors of the showcase, they'll have a line of tees and hoodies available for sale during the show.) Methodus, the Fort Lauderdale DJ who's slated to spin a set on Friday, produced the disc. — Eric W. Saeger
