Perhaps because this historic Hispanic lane hosts a youth hostel on one corner, its street cafés have always seemed designed to appeal to student budgets rather than human taste buds. Fortunately, this atmospheric, movie set, Spanish-looking tapas bar has joined À La Folie and Tangerine on the short list of Española eateries where food's more than cheap filler. Almost three dozen different tapas are served, each small plate containing enough food for several people to sample a bite. Among the tastiest picks are a Spanish cheese sampler containing manchego as well as relative rarities like Picon and Drunken Goat; crisp-battered calamari; chorizo cooked in cidre; serrano ham (not, due to FDA import regulations, the Spanish cured meat, but quality prosciutto-like ham); pulpo de Galicia, and clams in garlicky tomato sauce. To wash down the tapas, chose from more than four dozen bottles of Spanish wine or sherry, many of which are also available by the glass.
