There are all kinds of Latin restaurants in Miami: Colombian, Cuban, and Nicaraguan in almost equal numbers. But one restaurants purveying a lesser-known Latin cuisine is Sabores Chilenos - a Chilean restaurant located on the corner of a popular strip mall in Sweetwater. Walls decorated with photos of food practically seduce you into ordering. The whole thing started as a home business selling Chilean pastries and baked goods. Miami Chileans rejoiced and Sabores Chilenos was born: half bakery, half restaurant, all good. Delight in a palta rellena ($9.50), a fresh avocado filled with shrimp, or a palta rellena con atun ($8.50), an avocado filled with tuna fish. Definitely try the congrio frito con ensalada Chilena ($13.99), some kingklip fish pieces, perfectly fried, with a Chilean salad made with tomato and onion. And regulars just love food for the poor - the lomo de cerdo a lo pobre ($11.99), which literally translates to "pork loin done poor-style" is pork topped with fried eggs, French fries, and sautéed onions. Sitting deep inside a well-worn strip mall, the location isn't the most attractive or welcoming, but the food sure is.
