Grass

The new Grass, unlike the old Grass, is more about food than attitude. The outdoor tiki-lounge aspect to the Design District restaurant remains a seductive draw for those who just want to tarry about with tropical drink in hand. Summer rainstorms might prove inconvenient for diners, because although a bulky thatched roof covers most of the area, around the perimeter there are tables and sofa seating left exposed to the elements. When weather cooperates, though, it is divine to dine under the stars amid lush foliage, illuminated flora, and a beautifully backlit bar. Executive chef Michael Jacobs, original top toque at Tantra almost 10 years ago, executes a concise menu of predominantly Asian-inspired, contemporary American fare, with a resolute emphasis on seafood. Best bets are the wild salmon, mahi-mahi, and yellow jack (Atlantic hamachi) straight off the grill, served with choice of one of five dips. Pomegranate and ginger poached shrimp is a tasty starter, but the cuisine is uneven: A duck taco appetizers was overwhelmed by melted cheese, a grouper came oversalted, and a $39 rib eye steak was not worth the money. Still, the space is gorgeous, desserts are delicious, and the service is strong. Entrées are mostly planted in the $20 range, which is reasonable, but cocktails, appetizers, and desserts are not cheap, and can add up to more than a little green.
