Doraku

1104 Lincoln Rd
Miami Beach, FL 33139

Website
Friday happy hour at this casually stylish spot (a seafood spinoff of the old-school Benihana Japanese steak house chain) has long been legendary among savvy sushi fans seeking a bargain. From 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., the price of a nine-buck specialty cocktail gets you two drinks and unlimited trips to a small but tasty buffet of sushi and Pan-Asian snacks. Don’t pass up the regular menu, though; prices are no lower than those at any SoBe sushi bar, but dishes are generally more creative. Especially recommended is the carpaccio (salmon, hamachi, or ahi) in beautifully balanced sauces; crispy rock shrimp and oriental basil leaves, both lightly battered and near-greaselessly fried; and a spicy, crispy salmon roll, a textbook example of how to use tempura flakes with savory subtlety. There’s also an unusually large selection of vegetarian items, plus an extensive list of boutique sakes.
