Abbey Brewing Co.
1115 16th St
Miami Beach, FL 33139
305-538-8110
http://abbeybrewingcompany.com Small, dark, cozy, and relatively quiet. What is this joint doing in South Beach? A large selection of high-quality imported and homemade beer and an unpretentious vibe are standard here. If you need something to absorb all the alcohol you've consumed, food is served from open till close. The Abbey represents the type of bars Miami is lacking low-key, modest, relaxed, holes in the wall.

Bird Bowl
9275 SW 40th St
Miami, FL 33165
305-221-1221
http://www.birdbowl.com Before cell phones and the Internet, there was Bird Bowl. This old-fashioned, Big Lebowski-style bowling alley has been open for 52 years. Besides the lanes, there's a billiard room with 18 newly re-covered tables, an arcade with tons of videogames, and a lounge area with nightly drink specials. Next to the lounge is Perky's Pizza, which serves piping-hot slices.

Boardwalk Tavern & Pizzeria
3421 Main Hwy
Coconut Grove, FL 33133
305-567-0080
This bar is a hidden gem, and there are only two ways to get to it. Either enter Boardwalk Pizzeria and walk through the restaurant, past the dining tables, out the back door, and into the dark bar. Or pass the dumpsters in the parking lot, turn right, and voila. The outdoor tiki bar is secluded for a reason: This place is punk rock, and it gets rowdy as hell. Drunk women have been known to undress and dance on the bar, Donny "the homeless comedian" tells jokes while he rolls cigarettes, and the DJ spins old-school hip-hop. There are a couple of TV sets usually tuned to ESPN, and the drinks are inexpensive. Next time you are in the Grove, try to find the Boardwalk.

Bongos Cuban Cafe

Miami, FL 33132
786-777-2100
http://www.bongoscubancafe.com This is as close as it gets to Havana's Tropicana, the swanky, pre-Castro supper club where "Babalu" was born. The salsa theme puts on the ritz accompanied by lots of Cuban food, lots of Cuban music, and lots of Cubans period.

Bougainvillea's Old Florida Tavern

http://bougiesbar.com Every night feels like a house party at this bar that resembles a wooden cottage. The front porch is quiet enough for conversation and sipping Patrón on ice. Inside the dark bar, there are always live bands jamming while people dance and drink. The back patio features another bar and hookahs available for smoking. This place rules!
