Aimed at maximum crowd-pleasing, Thai/sushi restaurants are an Americanized concept from the get-go. This friendly neighborhood spot pulls out all the stops, with playfully named fare that’s far from authentic but fun, fresh, and geared to local tastes. Although some individual nigiri sushi and maki rolls with raw fish are available for purists, most makis are elaborate affairs featuring cream cheese and/or fried seafood plus occasional tropical oddities. Notable examples include Jimmy in the Jungle (eel, eel sauce, scallion, and banana) and the American Dream (shrimp tempura, scallions, avocado, eel sauce, and fried conch fritter). If those aren’t imaginative enough, there’s a “Create Your Own Roll” option. Thai dishes, though oversweet by traditional Thai standards, are tasty — and customizable regarding heat, if not sugar, level. Prices are also user-friendly, especially on the weekday Thai special lunch menu, where even items containing high-ticket ingredients like duck and shrimp don’t approach double digits.
