A turo-turo is an informal, cafeteria-style Filipino restaurant where you choose your meal by pointing to any number of selections displayed on a steam-table buffet. American Adobo is a storefront turo-turo located in downtown North Miami, open for breakfast and lunch daily except Sunday. With an eight-table dining room in front, and a long counter with barstools next to the steam table toward the back, there are lots of happy, well-fed customers throughout, many watching Filipino TV as they eat. Every day brings new selections, so there is no printed menu. Adobo, the national dish of the Philippines, is available daily, with either chicken or pork cooked to succulent tenderness in mild vinegar, garlic, and spices. Pancit, fine noodles sautéed with chicken, shrimp, and a variety of vegetables, is a delicious alternative or accompaniment. Skewers of barbecue pork are burnished to a mahogany finish but are moist and just chewy enough on the inside. Braised chayote squash in a savory broth is a tasty side dish, and generous portions of steamed white rice go with everything. A variety of soft drinks is available, and authentic homemade desserts are served, including crisply fried banana fritters, and frosty rainbow-color halo-halo with coconut and jackfruit. Service, though minimal, is enthusiastic, informative, welcoming, and friendly. In addition, prices could not be more reasonable. If you’re of a mind to try Filipino cooking at home, American Adobo has a grocery section in the back, replete with hard-to-find imported ingredients.
