Alta Cocina

5837 Sunset Dr
South Miami, FL 33143
305-662-7435
Website
Alta’s most appealing aspect is its clean-lined, 76-seat dining room, defined by buffed hardwood floors and black wood columns playing handsomely off white linens and light, unadorned walls. Spousal owners Vani and Juan Mario Maza have good intention in trying to create a personal, neighborhood restaurant in South Miami, and some of the cleanly presented dishes succeed -- light salted cod fritters, curried chicken with roti, and Gorgonzola-glazed gnocchi with tenderly braised oxtail meat. But there is an amateurishness to the way the restaurant operates, from the staff neglecting to hand out a wine list, to a waiter forgetting to tell us of the specials, to the room feeling frigid and the drinking water warm. A big iron is needed for all the kinks. Or, let’s hope, maybe just some time.
