The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" and John Travolta in flared pants -- that's what comes to mind when you hear the word "disco." But even though platform shoes and sequined jumpsuits were the craze in the '70s, Basement Miami has a different take on discotheque culture. Owned by Ian Schrager -- the cofounder of quintessential disco club Studio 54 -- and Mariott International, Basement opened during Art Basel Miami Beach 2014, when it hosted some of the season's best arty parties with the likes of James Murphy, Horse Meat Disco, and Louie Vega. Located on the ground floor of the newly reincarnated 1955 Seville Hotel, now known as the Miami Beach Edition, Basement avoids velvet ropes and VIP areas. It's just a simple nightclub and lounge area -- well, a bowling alley and ice-skating rink too. Oh, and flashing lights designed by Patrick Woodroffe, the genius who has illuminated concerts for Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympics.
