Atchana Capellini and her family have spent decades running Thai restaurants across Miami. Yet only in recent years has their traditional homestyle cooking taken root and is now on full display at Atchana's Homegrown Thai. Take, for instance, the miang kham, which looks like a lettuce wrap but is it anything but. One of the many small dishes arranged on a large plate holds wrinkly pale-pink dried shrimp. In another are toasted coconut flakes. Yet another bears tiny beige cubes you later learn are bits of ginger and garlic. Even the leaves look different. Rather than the ruffled bright-green fronds of buttery iceberg lettuce, these betel leaves are deep green and spade-shaped, with an almost unnoticeable flavor. The pad thai is full of punchy fish sauce, and the cold ground chicken salad called lab gai brings the Thai heat. Combine all the food with the place's street-food vibe and you won't be able to avoid regretting all the years you spent eating coconut curries at lesser spots. But don't fret: Atchana's has curries too, and they're full of spices and herbs, just the way they ought to be.
