This concert will feature the FIU Symphonic Band, the FIU Brass Choir and the Zelda Glazier Band of Miami Arts Studio. The FIU Symphonic Band’s program opens with Jay Bocook’s Gloriana, which was commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president and is based on The Faerie Queene, an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. In the poem, Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queen herself, Gloriana. The concert continues with a moving work by Robert Spittal entitled PACEM. Swelling from a lyrically introspective opening to an emphatic climax, this songful work reflects the scope of the struggle for personal and universal peace.
The next set of tunes is a tribute to the music of Percy Grainger featuring Daniel Kallman’s THE JIG IS UP and Grainger’s SPOON RIVER. The concert will close with a performance of Dana Wilson’s COLORADO PEAKS.
