http://www.laurenzosmarket.com Some people need special lighting, kitschy artwork, stuffy classical music, and sky-high prices to feel like they're buying gourmet. If that's you, skip Laurenzo's, where the focus is on awesome food at reasonable prices. The family has been in the food biz in South Florida since 1951, and many locals have been customers for decades. The store is huge, offering hard-to-find high-end and/or imported grocery products, gorgeous produce (from the farmers' market across the street), luscious seafood and meats, and what is most often described as an "interesting" wine selection — not immense, but inventive. There's an amazing collection of fresh pasta for just a few bucks a pound, along with more feta cheese than you can shake a Greek walking stick at. Olives, fresh fish, butchers who listen — this place is just short of perfect. The family recipes behind the prepared foods have gained fame far beyond Miami. In fact, the Food Network's Road Tasted recently popped by to sample Laurenzo's stone crab bisque, one of the family's best-loved, buttery, spicy delicacies. Like a good Italian son, though, David Laurenzo declined to reveal a few key ingredients on national television. More >>
Despite the plethora of delicious pastelitos to be found at Miami's 4,587 Latin bakeries - there are still certain sweet treats only the French have been able to master. Think baguettes and pan au chocolat (chocolate croissant). Le Royal French Bakery is South Miami's go-to boulangerie/patisserie, with all that you'd expect from a French bakery (tarts, macarons, croissants galore), plus salads, sammies and cafe au laits. A one-time winner of our Best Croissant award, you can score the flaky, buttery treats in flavors like guava, ham & cheese and almond, to name a few. More >>
If you're an out-of-towner who's enamored by Miami's uniquely Cuban culture - it's a given that you'll want to carry a little piece of it home with you. And Little Havana To Go is the perfect place to do just that. This Shenandoah spot serves up jewelry, t-shirts, chotchkies, ash trays, keychains. Whatever essentially useless crap you're looking for (aka souvenirs) they've probably got it. Tour buses regularly pass by, so you're likely to run into fellow tourists in a souvenir shopping frenzy. All in all, there's no better way for you to reminisce about bikinis and palm trees one frigid December night than with some steamy Latin swag. Soak it up. More >>
