http://www.groundupandrising.org For the folks at Ground Up and Rising, theater is about more than just entertainment. To this talented team, it's about promoting empathy for fellow humans and showcasing our species' common sensibilities. They're a diverse crew who aims to push through the limitations of traditional theater and speak to the young and often disenchanted; those who might find little of meaning in standard performance fare. They're all about the cutting edge, from bringing Macbeth to the masses at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens to taking on edge modern tales like Hoch’s Jails, Hospitals & Hip-Hop at O Cinema. Headquartered in Coral Gables, they make the rounds to various venues around town, so catch 'em when you can. More >>

Gusman Center for the Performing Arts

    174 E. Flagler St. Miami, FL 33131

http://www.gusmancenter.org Old is the new new. Especially in a city like Miami, where historic charms are often bulldozed to make way for new school crap. Thank God for the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, a shining beacon to Miami's glamorous past, smack dab in the middle of downtown. Erected in 1926 as a home for silent movies, this recently restored palace oozes charisma, from the red velvet curtains to the baroque balconies. The theater's simulated night-sky ceiling has looked down on the likes of Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Luciano Pavarotti and countless other notable names. Today, they host movie screenings, concerts, live performances and a whole host of other events. So get glammed up and spend an evening immersed in what once was. There's something to be said for the classics, after all. More >>
