Broward Center for the Performing Arts

201 SW 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312
    954-462-0222

http://www.browardcenter.org South Florida has tons of venues for theater and live music: for the most part, they’re run of the mill. Not the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Situated directly on the beautifully landscaped riverwalk portion of the New River, the Broward Center screams elegance before you even enter the door. And then you head in: high ceilings, fancy lighting, and newly renovated theaters. The decor will definitely help you to--at least, somewhat--justify the high ticket prices. More >>

  • Congas Night Club

    Congas Night Club

    2079 N. University Drive Plantation, FL 33322
    954-749-9669

http://www.congasclub.com Congas Nightclub features live bands and DJs who play the spectrum of Latin music from salsa to merengue to reggaeton and even spin a little bit of house and hip-hop. Congas' understated storefront is located in the back of a Plantation strip mall between a Goodwill and a Chinese buffet. • Culture Room

    Culture Room

3045 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306
    954-564-1074

http://www.cultureroom.net It's hot, loud, and way too crowded. But would you expect anything less from a rock club? The Culture Room books an eclectic mix of bands. On any given week they might have David Allan Coe, the Misfits, Johnny Winter, a local group of hardcore rockers, and northern Europe's meanest-sounding death metal makers. What sets the Culture Room apart from the other hot and sweaty clubs around, though, isn't necessarily what goes on atop the large stage; it's the nice, refreshing atmosphere just outside the main concert room. If you don't care so much about seeing your favorite rock stars up close, in the flesh, you can still rock out a few feet away, under the beautiful Florida sky — and watch a video projection of the show while you sip a beer. Or if you're really hardcore, as you pound Jägermeister and break the bottle over your own head. More >>

  • The Historic Downtowner

    The Historic Downtowner

10 S. New River Drive E. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
    954-463-9800

http://www.downtownersaloon.com You've exited the jailhouse, and with just a few steps in the throwaway sandals so kindly provided, you've crossed the street — into the Downtowner Saloon's lot. Because that insufferable block of cement has just vanished from view, dine outside and relish the backdrop of downtown's unadulterated skyline. This coveted seat is far removed from the cold metal seats of yesteryear. You might have spent yesterday peering through thin slit windows, but now you have the horizon to contemplate: boats cruising under two cotton-candy-pink bridges. Order a cocktail or glass of wine and some food. It's not your last meal; you can come back tomorrow. There's a special no matter which night of the week you get bailed out of jail. More >>

  • Green Room

    Green Room

109 SW 3rd Ave. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312
    954-449-1030

http://www.greenroomlive.com The multilevel Green Room is the latest addition to the America's Backyard/Revolution family, providing the downtown Fort Lauderdale locale with a unique nighttime hangout. Although chic in décor with white leather couches, fancy lighting systems, and Marie Antoinette-style chandeliers, the attitude is far from that of red-velvet roped-off club. An enormous dance floor fills up the center of the club where the local hip 20-somethings gyrate to indie sounds and electro beats. Adjacent is the stage, often filled with musical acts from the local area, and the occasional burlesque troupe performance by the Reckless Dames. Newly installed is the venue's art gallery, a place for South Florida's up-and-coming artists to showcase their talent during weekly event "Gallery Saturdays." Focusing less on the VIP club concept, the Green Room is Fort Lauderdale's answer to a laid-back night of good times and dancing with friends. More >>

  • Revolution Live

    Revolution Live

100 SW 3rd Ave. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312
    954-449-1025

http://www.jointherevolution.net Formerly the Chili Pepper and before that the Edge, this spot has hosted some of the best bands to come through South Florida. The three levels (floor, balcony, and upper balcony) allow for ample standing room to watch your favorite bands. The décor is reminiscent of socialist propaganda (viva la Revolution!), but it's a little more subtle than Palm Beach County's indie-rock staple Propaganda. Drinks will cost you, but the atmosphere, standing room, and powerful air conditioning more than make up for it. More >>

  • Sonny

    Sonny's Stardust Lounge

5181 Powerline Road Oakland Park, FL 33309
    954-776-6082

Sonny's Stardust Lounge is an institution around these parts. Creative types have inhabited its dark corners, rockers have frequented the punk shows that owner Sonny Scott used to host, and many a country line dancer has do-si-doed her way across the dance floor. Never been there? You'll surely recognize it as the imposing, sometimes ominous-looking, two-story white building off Powerline in Fort Lauderdale. Loads of offbeat blues and country acts have come through Sonny's over the past 30 years, and the jukebox, fittingly, avoids the Billboard charts. (Ask Sonny about his time as a country-music star.) Walk inside and the décor looks like it hasn't been changed since it opened, complete with retro-rific diagonal mirrors and '70s-era wood paneling. You'll be hard-pressed to stand; there are tables and seats everywhere. This comes in handy when you watch the gems Sonny shows on his big-screen projection TV. More >>
