The neighborhood watering hole offers affordable drinks, a stocked jukebox, and the proper barstool pastime -- darts. Occasional bands play live and Wednesday night is ladies' night. More >>
http://www.peppysinthegables.com Don't be misled by the vaguely Spanish name -- this place is purely Italian. It also looks more like a cottage than a restaurant, which only amplifies the cozy and intimate vibe that makes this romantic little eatery an excellent date spot. While nibbling complimentary roasted-and-mashed garlic spread on crusty bread, enjoy the charms of Peppy's exceptional waiters, who will steer you in the direction of whatever your stomach craves. Pasta dishes are masterful, especially those made with cream sauces and seafood. The Dante veal preparation is an inferno of flavor. And if you're feeling any kind of financial strain, no worries: There's a four-course dinner deal that includes an appetizer, soup or salad, entrée, dessert, and glass of wine for just $20. So grab a date, catch a buzz and maybe a little amore, and head to Peppy's the next time you're feeling saucy. More >>
http://www.renaissanceatthegables.com Sitting on SW 32 Avenue, in a mostly residential area, Renaissance at the Gables is more than just a restaurant. The large structure houses a restaurant, banquet facilities, and VIP room that is really just a nightclub. If you've ever been to a quinces, you know banquet-hall food is usually not very appetizing. Not here - the food is so good, the restaurant operates full-time, even when there is no banquet, wedding, or 15th birthday party. Try the juicy and tender churrasco ($15.95), which comes with maduros (fried sweet plantains) and rice and beans. Or treat yourself to one of the best-priced seafood rice platters, the arroz con mariscos for two ($30.00). Servers are friendly and attentive, and you'll be treated the same whether you're in the restaurant or VIP room. But be prepared for a festive evening - there is always live music. It's definitely not a place for quiet, romantic dinners. More >>
http://www.titanicbrewery.com This brewpub across the way from the University of Miami is owned by beer lover Kevin Rusk, who makes it a point to pour good, homemade suds to accompany great live music. Since the place opened in the Nineties, the menu hasn't changed an iota. The seasonal brews are always a delight: The Triple Screw is a fail-safe standby, and the guest-starring Woodchuck cider tastes like frothy heaven. Generously sized empanada appetizers boast tasty meat interiors and flaky pastry exteriors. Other standouts include crawfish-and-andouille bisque, and steamed mussels "fra diablo." On a recent visit, the steerage skirt steak sandwich came dangerously rare in the middle, but the Santa Fe chicken salad, with creamy garlic dill dressing, was crunchy and delicious. Dinner entrée prices top out at $17.95, which will nab you either a rib eye steak or soft-shell crabs, and $14.95 for shrimp étoufée is a steal. Rotating rock bands and slurring coeds are regular fixtures. The Sunday night karaoke delivers a hearty dose of Journey and Sublime. More >>
