27. New York Spicy Tuna Roll at Toni's Sushi Bar
It appears so unassuming, like any other roll at every-man's neighborhood sushi spot. Same seaweed, rice, spicy mayo...and yet, from the first taste you'll notice something is different. It's the texture of the fish; unexpectedly smooth, courtesy of stellar knife skills behind the sushi bar. They chop it into a fine mince, almost like a chunky tuna paste. Scallions are utilized sparingly, giving a complementary aftertaste of onion without overwhelming the other flavors. A slight infusion of smoke lingers in the mayo, and there is just the right amount of heat. The New York Spicy Tuna Roll ($7.50) at Toni's Sushi Bar truly takes me to Manhattan, conjuring images of my favorite Japanese restaurants. They've been in the business since 1987, almost a historical registry nominee in a city that turns over eateries fast (exhibit A: they recently shuttered World Resource Cafe). For sushi without attitude, this is as good as it gets, so let's try to keep the place profitable please.
