"Is that real?" we caught ourselves thinking aloud while the lady behind the counter at Ms. Cheezious patiently waited for us to answer our own question.
Jesus, it is real.
Like kids waiting their turn for the ice-cream man to take their order, a small queue was forming behind us as we attempted to comprehend the reality of a chicken and waffle grilled cheese sandwich.
A coronary? That's probably the bigger reality, but the better reality is that if you haven't tried it, you need to get on that.
New Times has been in Wynwood for seven months. We've grown accustomed to the perks, like having the Ms. Cheezious food truck park right outside Panther Coffee every Thursday around lunchtime. It has become a bit of an office field trip. One of us makes the rounds to all the desks asking if anyone wants to join in on the Cheezious parade. It's about a three-minute stroll from our building to Panther, so finding a buddy to tag along is never an issue.
Last Thursday, we moseyed over with a small bunch and came to a crossroads. No, it wasn't a decision to go north or south on NW Second Avenue. The special melts that day were a braised short rib grilled cheese with provolone, pickled caramelized onions, and arugula on sourdough ($10) or a chicken and waffle melt made with a fresh Belgian waffle, cheddar cheese, and fried chicken served with country gravy and maple syrup ($9).
So this happened:
What the menu description failed to mention was the crisp seasoned batter on the chicken or the crunchy-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside waffle or that the country gravy was not any old gravy but gravy with black pepper and enough pride to make a Southern grandmama proud. Indeed, it was difficult to decide whether we wanted to commit to the maple syrup or country gravy, so we alternated between bites, and that worked out just fine.
Do yourself a solid and be on the lookout for this king of sandwiches. Next time Ms. Cheezious offers it, the truck will announce it on Twitter.
