Bank robbery is not a dumb man's game. With high-tech security and cunning police, there's little room for amateurish. Even if you do manage to make off with some loot, you better have a good get away plan. That usually involves making sure your getaway driver isn't asleep, and if he is, that you can run on foot without your bounty weighing you down. A trio of would-be robbers who tried to hit up a Wachovia on South Beach this weekend didn't get that memo.
Oscar Montoya and Juan Hernandez's ill-conceived plan started at about 5:45 on Sunday morning when they smashed through the front window of the Wachovia bank at the intersection of Lincoln and Alton Roads in South Beach.
According to NBC Miami, what they didn't realize is that when the bank is closed all of the cash is kept in the vault. Unprepared to pull of a high-tech vault break in, they decided to find all the quarters, nickels and dimes they could and collect them in bags.
Anyone who's ever kept a five gallon jug of spare change in their closet knows that a bunch of coins can get real heavy.
Though, all Montoya and Hernandez had to do was get the coins to their car, but unfortunately their getaway driver, 23-year-old Ricard Barrios, was asleep behind the wheel. Though, police aren't sure whether or not Barrios actually knew his friends were busy robbing a bank. Which is another good point for would-be robbers: not only should you make sure your driver is awake, you should also make sure he knows what the hell is going on.
Police were on the scene quickly and only had to wake Barrios up before arresting him.
Montoya and Hernandez were caught trying to make off with the change on foot, but because the loot was weighing them down, they were easily apprehended.
