Tonya Burns, 36, appeared in court yesterday for allegedly using a tire iron to strike her 15-year-old daughter in front of Carol City High School.
The incident occurred Tuesday morning, after the teen told Burns that she didn't want to go to school that day. Burns dropped her off but noticed she was leaving campus. So she pulled out a tire iron and began whacking away.
"So I pulled up, grabbed the stick, and hit her to go back in school," she told a judge yesterday, according to NBC Miami.
The girl put her hands up to defend herself, suffering welts and some swelling on her arm.
Burns is being held on $50,000 bond. Her multiple children were placed in the custody of their grandmother and father. If she does post bail, she will be put under house arrest. She has also been told not to have any contact with the daughter.
