Former county mayoral candidate and current Miami New Times columnist Luther Campbell has a new gig. Miami City Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones has appointed the former 2 Live Crew frontman to serve on the board of the Miami Sports & Exhibition Authority, which was recently given oversight of the Miami Marine Stadium. Although Spence-Jones says Campbell's appointment is unrelated to the city's waterfront property on Virgina Key.

"Mr. Campbell has been actively involved in sports related programs for young people for many years," she says. "I think he can be a vital catalyst as we look to improve those type of programs for kids in Miami."

Earlier this month, a divided Miami commission voted 3-2 to approve a three party agreement between the authority, the city and Friends of Miami Marine Stadium. The deal will allow the recently established nonprofit preservation group to develop a plan to renovate the dilapidated stadium and raise the $30 million needed to save the facility.

Spence-Jones and Frank Carrollo voted against the agreement because it did not go through a competitive bidding.

The authority was created in 1983 to promote sports, conventions and exhibitions in the Magic City. Most notably, it oversaw construction of the old Miami Arena. Campbell has been a long-time supporter of Spence-Jones and aggressively championed her innocence when she had been criminally charged in two separate public corruption probes.

She was found not guilty in one case and charges were dismissed in the other.
