While most of America was belligerently chanting about the luck of the Irish this weekend, one Ireland was having what might have been the worst weekend of his professional life: Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland. He officially lost Peyton Manning, and then he missed out on Matt Flynn too.
Now, Steelers player Ryan Clark has took to Twitter to say that "no one" wants play for the Dolphins, and hinted that Ireland is to blame.
During a Twitter binge last night, Clark retweeted a message saying, "No kidding! NO ONE wants to go to the Dolphins!" and added, "No one! To believe I almost went there but it was easy decision not to. GM."
When Dolfans protested it was a low blow, Clark proclaimed, "It's my honest opinion. Not a good guy making decisions."
Clark also retweeted a Tweet from Sport Illustrated's Peter King, saying "Talked to Flynn. Said a big factor in Sea over Mia was vibe in the building in Seattle: 'The coaches, the staff--they were fantastic.'''
As if it wasn't obvious Clark was making jibes at Ireland, Clark answered a question directly about Ireland. "What did Ireland do to you? Ask if your mom was a prostitute?" a follower asked.
"No he asked someone else that," Clark replied, referring to Ireland's legendarily ham-handed question to Dez Bryant last year.
"Done w talk of the Dolphins. Good luck to their team. Their are some good men working hard to win games ON the field," Clark concluded before moving on.
And Ireland certainly isn't ON the field.
In a column this morning, King, the SI writer retweeted by Clark, ran down the most baffling decisions made by the Dolphins in the past decade plus.
Most of those pre-date Ireland: hiring Nick Saban, passing on Mike Tomlin, passing on Drew Brees, letting Wes Walker go.
To his credit, Ireland hasn't made that sort of head-scratcher yet. He brings a whole new type of sucking to the Dolfins: the botched pursuit. It seems he knows who to target, he just can't hit the target very often. Under Ireland the team has missed out on bringing in coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher and now quarterbacks Manning and Flynn. None of those involved are going to publicly say so, but there's enough indications that the prospect of working with Ireland wasn't exactly enticing enough to anyone.
