A brief car chase on I-95 last night led to Miami-Dade Police shooting and injuring a suspect. The incident began when an erratic driver refused to stop for police near NE 79th Street and Second Avenue a little after 9 p.m. The driver tried to hit an officer with his car before speeding off.

The silver Ford Mustang ended up crashing while entering I-95. The driver attempted to side-swipe an unmarked police car before crashing into a barrier near Ives Dairy Road.

After the crash, the driver ran across the busy interstate and into a wooded area. Police followed and confronted the man. That's when a Miami-Dade officer fired his gun and wounded the suspect in the abdomen.

The suspect is recovering in the hospital. No officers were hurt.

The incident severely backed up northbound traffic on the interstate last night.
