A few months ago, we told you about the NDS Market - a little pop-up shop filled with wearables and books by Miami artists, curated by designer Nektar de Stagni. It was an amazing one-stop shop and a rare opportunity to take a little piece Miami's rich culture home with you. But now you'll be able to scratch your consumer itch all year long via a few quick click of a mouse via Sweat Records' new online store, SweatShopMiami.com.
They say they were inspired by BuyOlympia.com, a site selling Washington state-based indie work from artists such as Nikki McClure. Sweat's brick-and-mortar store in Little Haiti has been selling Miami's indie goods for years. But for folks like us - who are on short leashes to their laptops - we welcome the chance to buy local without having to hit pavement. It also means indie-loving consumers the globe over will have a chance to admire, purchase, and support the 305's culture crew.
With fiscal support from a Knight Arts grant (read our Q&A with
Dennis Scholl here) and a new online sales director (Emile Milgrim), the
site opened last week with over 400 products. And we're pumped to see
that the inventory reflects a who's who of all the talent we've been bragging about here on Cultist.
For books, there's Miami zine Jai-Lai, the novel Headz by Cultist
contributor J.J. Colagrande, Pure Imagination by Matt Gajewski, and Beatriz Monteavaro book from [NAME] Publications. In wearables, there's
Nektar de Stagni jewelry and T-shirts from Churchill's, local bands like
ANR, Miami Bike Scene, Jen Stark, and Coral Morphologic. The gift
category includes wallets by photographer Claudia Calle as well geek chic HungChains.
And because the Sweat peeps are awesome, we're even learning about Miami
artists, writers, and designers that were otherwise off our radar. We
can't want to check out the graphic novels and artwork of Cuban,
Miami-raised queer punk artist and activist Cristy C. Road. Looks like
great stuff. And of course, they are pages and pages of LPs, vinyl, cassettes, and CDs
from Miami's local bands. But we'll let Crossfade fill you in on that.
